3 Simple Metrics to Gauge Your Sleep Quality
No sleep tracker needed
Your sleep tracker says "47 minutes deep sleep" but if you don't know whether that's good or bad, the number is useless. Three simple criteria are enough.
1. Sleep onset: 15-20 minutes from lying down to falling asleep is normal. Under 5 minutes means you have sleep debt. Over 30 minutes means something's interfering.
2. Night awakenings: How often you wake up at night. 1-2 times is normal. Waking up for bathroom trips every time, or staying awake 30+ minutes after waking, is a problem.
3. The 30-minute test: Can you wake without an alarm? Does your head clear within 30 minutes of waking? This is the most important indicator. How you feel in the morning tells you more than any number.
Sleep apps aren't bad per se. But losing sleep because you're anxious about the numbers ("I only got 40 minutes of deep sleep!") defeats the purpose. There's a name for this: Orthosomnia — obsessing over sleep data to the point where it worsens your sleep.
Action Points
Check sleep onset — 15-20 min is healthy
Night awakenings — 2 or fewer is normal
Observe if your head clears within 30 min of waking
