5-Minute Resets for Desk Workers
Not exercise — it's an alertness reset
Sit for 2 hours straight and blood flow slows, oxygen to the brain drops, and drowsiness sets in. This is separate from fitness. Even if you run 30 minutes daily, sitting the remaining 8 hours causes this problem.
5-minute reset every 2 hours
This isn't gym-level exercise. The goal is to circulate blood and boost alertness.
Standing options:
Fast marching in place for 30 seconds
10 squats — large muscle activation quickly improves blood flow
Arm circles + shoulder shrugs, 10 reps
Walk up and down 1-2 flights of stairs
At your desk:
Seated leg raises, 10 reps
Neck and shoulder stretches, 30 seconds
Deep breathing: 5 cycles (4-second inhale, 4-second hold, 6-second exhale)
The key is frequency, not intensity. Light movement every 2 hours beats one intense session for maintaining alertness.
If you use the Pomodoro technique (25 min work / 5 min break), use those 5-minute breaks for movement.
Action Points
Set timer every 2 hours → 5 min movement
10 squats + 30-sec marching is the minimum set
Use Pomodoro breaks as movement breaks
